One of the most famous cities in the world, Liverpool
has a long and very varied history. It was founded in 1207 and granted
city status in 1880, between which dates it grew into
a major sea port and featured significantly in the slave trade in the
18th century.
Many Irish immigrants also passed through Liverpool and
its cosmopolitan population has helped to make it one of the most
culturally aware cities in the UK, especially in the music industry.
Liverpool artists have had more number one singles than those from any
other city.
The city also has a rich architectural heritage and was the site
of the world's first railway tunnel, started in 1829.
